The cast and crew of Law and Order: SVU surprised fans last spring when, for the first time, they began filming their upcoming season only two weeks after completing season 15.

Typically, the series finishes filming in May and picks up again in late July but, since they didn’t take their usual break until the end of June, they only just resumed filming last week.

It’s only been two weeks since the cast and crew of Law and Order: SVU wrapped shooting the season 15 finale but, in an unprecedented move, they’ll be back to work in NYC tomorrow.

From what we’ve heard, the show’s producers have decided to begin filming season 16 now and then break again at the end of June for their usual hiatus.

Back on Oct. 18 the cast of Law and Order: SVU filmed several scenes outside 60 Centre St in NYC.

The cast, including Mariska Hargitay, Kelli Giddish, and Raúl Esparza, were all smiles as they joked and laughed between takes.

On Tuesday dozens of extras gathered outside the courthouse on Centre Street in Manhattan to film a protest scene for Law and Order: SVU ripped straight from the headlines.

In the episode, which will air in October, guest star Cybill Shepherd plays a woman loosely based on Florida gunman George Zimmerman who has killed a black teen named Mehcad.

During Tuesday’s shoot Shepard and her lawyer, played by Jeffrey Tambor, are met by a large crowd of protestors – a scene reminiscent of the recent Trayvon Martin protests that have taken place around the country – as they try to leave the court yet.

Yesterday the show’s Executive Producer Warren Leight told EW, “Tambor is a defense attorney representing a very high-profile celebrity woman chef who thought she was being pursued by a rapist and turned around it was a teenager. And she shot him. There’s a lot of stop and frisk elements to that as well.”

We have another collection of photos our readers have generously sent us from Law and Order: SVU at various location shoots across New York City.

The photo above was sent to us last fall by @Corinne0721 who said Mariska Hargitay “is the nicest person in the world.”

One of our readers, Dustin, spotted Law and Order: SVU filming near the High Line in New York City today. Mariska Hargitay, Danny Pino, and Tamara Tunie were all on set where they appeared to be “investigating” a murder.

In the photos you can see them searching a crime scene and later, between takes, you can see “the dead body” sitting up and talking to the cast!
