Last year we were lucky enough to go to the Sundance Film Fesitval and put together this list of tips for our newsletter. We thought we would rerun this article for those in Park City this year (btw, we are totally jealous)!
Sundance Survival Guide
Here’s how to get the most out of Park City’s premiere film festival
PLAN AHEAD
Seasoned Sundance attendees know that as soon as it ends, it is time to start planning for next year. Hotels and films fill up quickly. You can get email alerts at sundance.org letting you know when films are announced or tickets go on sale so you can remain one step ahead of the masses.
STAY WARM
The January temperatures in northern Utah can reach below zero. Hand warmers, long johns, hats, and gloves will be your best friends at the festival whether you are walking down Main Street or waiting for a shuttle. You may not blend in with the L.A. fashionistas but at least you won’t get frostbite.
FOLLOW THE PAPARAZZI
If you want to be guaranteed you will see celebrities, just look for the paparazzi. They will know where the biggest stars are and will be waiting outside for them. Get your camera out and you can blend right in.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK
Industry types aren’t the only ones networking at Sundance. Don’t be afraid to ask fellow fans how they got that swag, a table in the best restaurant, or Bono’s autograph. Fellow fans may be your best tipsters.
GET OUT OF PARK CITY
It is hard to resist spending the entire day in a theater with so many great films playing but don’t forget how beautiful your surroundings are. Hit the slopes right in Park City or the Sundance Resort. If skiing or snowboarding isn’t your thing, head out to Antelope Island in Salt Lake for the view and abundant wildlife.

Celebrities like Michael Cera, Virginia Madsen, Nick Cannon, Eliza Dukshu, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Harvey Weinstein, Andie MacDowell, Emily Vancamp, Denise Richards, and Jeff Daniels all attended Gen Art’s Sundance events this past weekend. Gen Art is the leading arts and entertainment organization dedicated to showcasing the best emerging talent in film, fashion, visual arts and music.
Both events celebrated actors who are committed to independent cinema: “7 Fresh Faces in Film” with 7 For All Mankind on January 16 and “It’s Better in the Dark” with Black – Kenneth Cole on January 17.
On Friday night, 7 For All Mankind and Gen Art honored seven talented up and coming actors at the 2nd annual “7 Fresh Faces in Film” celebration taking place at the Hollywood Life House Hosted by Virginia Madsen, the successful event featured seven rising stars who were toasted by members of the film and fashion communities.
Each one of the 7 Fresh Faces has at least one film premiering at this year’s festival. The honorees include: Zach Gilford (Dare, TV – Friday Night Lights), Tania Raymonde (The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, TV – Lost), Pell James (Shrink, Zodiac), Louisa Krause (Toe to Toe, The Babysitters), Charlyne Yi (Paper Heart, Knocked Up, TV – 30 Rock), Jess Weixler (Peter and Vandy), and Mark Duplass (Humpday, The Puffy Chair, co-wrote/co-directed Baghead).
On Saturday, Black – Kenneth Cole Fragrance and Gen Art saluted six actors for their dedication to the art of independent film at the “Kenneth Cole Black Party” taking place at Greenhouse @ The Sky Lodge (201 Heber Ave at Main Street), Park City.

This event honored some of today’s best acting talent who are dedicated to independent filmmaking. Kevin Bacon (Taking Chance), Jeff Daniels (Arlen Faber), Kevin Corrigan (Big Fan), Virginia Madsen, (Sideways), and Alan Cumming (Dare) were among the evening’s honorees and Nick Cannon (The Killing Room) will serve as guest DJ.

Both Black – Kenneth Cole Fragrance and Gen Art believe in the ongoing support and promotion of independent filmmaking and the arts. To commemorate this evening, Black – Kenneth Cole Fragrance will be making a $10,000 donation to the Sundance Institute on behalf of the evening’s honorees. This event is part of Gen Art’s long term commitment (and part of its 15th Anniversary) to promoting, showcasing, and building awareness for emerging independent artists through over a hundred annual events and dozens of grants. The Black – Kenneth Cole Fragrance Party is yet another occasion where Gen Art can spotlight talent and share it with both members of the industry and consumer film enthusiasts alike.
