Two new books take a look at the state of celebrity in our culture from different vantage points.

The Cult of Celebrity , by Cooper Lawrence, looks at what our facsination with celebs says about us as a society.

America’s fast-growing religion is—let’s face it—celebrity worship. From gossip magazines to entertainment TV, from blogs to ads featuring famous faces, the stars are our new gods and goddesses. But why are we so quick to put them on pedestals? Why are we even more spellbound when they topple back down to earth

The Cult of Celebrity is the first book to explore this phenomenon comprehensively and yet in eminently readable terms. In a compulsive read, Cooper Lawrence maps out the psychology behind the behavior of the stars—and that of the millions out there who follow their every move. She points both to the benefits and dangers not only to society but also to us personally; to our spending habits, health, social awareness, attitude toward personal failure and toward relationships, and above all, our self-image. And she offers practical tips on keeping our interest under control. Drawing on the latest research as well as interviews with fans and entertainment industry insiders, as well as celebrities themselves, The Cult of Celebrity is as accessible and sassy as it is thought-provoking.

On the other side of the coin is Perez Hilton’s Red Carpet Suicide which is a guide to becoming a celebrity from the expert himself.

Psycho celebrities dominate news, fashion, and trends, influencing how we speak, what we wear, and who we hang out with. We’re obsessed! Our gossip-driven world has set the barometer of what’s in or out. So, who are we trying to become and how do we become them? Post a grainy sex video online, drive high and wasted against oncoming traffic, flash for the cameras, and if that doesn’t work, attempt suicide and you’re bound to become a “Hilton.”

Now the man behind Hollywood’s most hated website—infamous for breaking raw superstar dish and jaw-dropping commentary—lends his fearless voice, notorious sense of humor, and outrageous sensibility to Red Carpet Suicide, the book celebrities have been looking forward to as much as their next DUI. Making sense of the madness and celebrity addiction that consumes us, Perez twists this irresistible and delicious guilty pleasure into a hysterically funny, shockingly true, and generation-defining survival guide.

Oh God, Who’s the Other One?

in News

Here is a list of what I learned watching the Golden Globes Last Night:

1. Eat Before You Go. Apparently, they take the food away before the actual ceremony starts so if you are busy working the red carpet you lose your chance at a free meal.
Note: This does not apply to Beyonce or Tom Cruise.

2. Avoid Making Eye Contact with Angelina Jolie. For the first time, I totally got the bitchy DIVA vibe from Angie last night. She just had that “you aren’t worthy of being in the same room as me” look on her face. I can’t imagine the earful Brad got on the way home after Kate Winslet couldn’t remember her name. At least she didn’t get left off the list completely, like Anne Hathaway.

3. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association Hates Monk. What’s up with Tony Shaloub and his wife sitting all alone?

4. More Celebs Should Be as Honest as Mickey Rouke. I loved that he thanked his dogs, good for him!

5. Tina Fey is a Genius. I try not to jump on the Tina Fey bandwagon. But then she does something like letting Tracy Morgan except 30 Rock’s Globe and I can’t help but reluctantly climb in with everyone else.

6. Dreams Can Come True. Kate Winslet, you go girl!

7. Jennifer Lopez is Too Old to Wear Half of a Gown. And what’s up with the “mama’s talking” thing?

8. Ryan Seacrest Can’t Ever Quit His Day Job. The best moment of the pre-show was when Ryan Seacrest was jumping around Brangelina, shouting their names before being pushed away by one of their handlers. Classic!

9. Demi Moore is an Overbearing Mother. Can’t you tell the poor girl not to “hunch” backstage?

10. Say Hello To You Mother For Me. Mark Wahlberg has been ruined forever. Can anyone look at him and not hear that infamous SNL line?

The Golden Globes make a great On Location Vacations, if you can get tickets. Tickets to the show are nearly impossible to get but a seat in the red carpet bleachers is within the realm of possibility, if you are willing to pay big bucks. You can rent a room at The Beverly Hilton for the night before and choose the room/bleacher package; prices range from $1500-$2500.
