Has a Shift Really Occured?

by Christine on November 18, 2008 · 0 comments

in Featured Essays

Last week, Will Smith was on Oprah and he declared,  “Human kind has changed forever, the shift has occured.” I don’t think I have to tell you what he was referring to, of course, he was talking about Barack Obama being elected the first black president of the United States.

But has a shift occurred? Yes, it is a testament to the many Americans who voted for Obama, that they were able to see beyond color. But, suddenly, everyone has forgotten that there are still millions who didn’t vote for him and many of them did so because he is black. The media has painted this picture of a perfect union, declaring that we have finally achieved the goals of our forefathers. But have we?

Even in the context of this triumph, what I have heard people say privately over the course of this election was shocking. I wear my politics on my sleeve (literally) which invites debate and comments, even when I don’t want them. In response to my Obama tees and Obama stickers, racist rhetoric has been spewed at me. Maybe it wasn’t all blatant, maybe some were just questioning Obama’s “patriotism” or worrying about “rioting” if he didn’t win. But some of it was astonishingly blatant, offensive, and crude. Over the past 21 months, I’ve heard it all, it makes me question the company I keep but I think we are all keeping that company, leading me to believe there is still a long way to go.

And this doesn’t even touch on those who voted for Obama thinking he will actually do more for “white people”. I heard this on NPR yesterday, “and what about reaction to Obama’s win by people who are racist? Weary, a Republican who voted for Obama, says that after the election, he went online to look at the hate Web sites, and he was surprised at what he found. “Interestingly enough, I found a lot of sentiment on there from these white supremacists actually backing Obama,” Weary says. “Crazy, right? Their viewpoint is that a black president is going to have to do more for white people, or for ‘white agendas,’ because he’s going to have to prove that he’s not just there for black people.”

It is wonderful that our next president will be a young black man but we can’t get too complacent, we still have to be aware that this doesn’t erase years of hate and prejudice. That it still looms close to the surface, that we still have work to do in order to truly achieve that perfect union.

Thoughts on Sarah Silverman

in Featured Essays

I overheard a conversation in Starbucks last week about Sarah Silverman. One young man said, “she’s rude”. Another said, “I don’t like her”.

This got me thinking, is Silverman a feminist? It seems like she is, pushing the line of what a woman can or can not do, what a woman can or can not say, but is that constructive? She plays with gender stereotypes, using her cute persona, opening her innocent doe-eyes wide open as she sings “I’m fucking Matt Damon”. In the tiniest voice she unleashes vicious and uproarious filth, pushing not only what is considered feminine but what is considered decent. Could a man get away with the same thing, if Dane Cook or Lewis Black sang “I’m fucking Jennifer Aniston”, would it be funny or offensive? Would those two young man like her if she were a man?

But maybe it is better to have a woman portrayed in the media as vulgar than just stupid? Take, for instance, Molly Shannon’s character on Kath and Kim. If The Sopraonos is about the American obsession with desire and consumption as EW recently declared, than Kath is Kim is about America’s celebrity obsession. Kath and Kim’s constant references to celebrities and general ignorance toward anything that doesn’t involve Brad and Angie grows tiresome. For every Liz Lemon, there are a dozen female characters on TV who promote the stereotype of women as simple, fashion obsessed, and catty. Considering this, maybe it is a positive that Silverman’s “naughty” character pushes the limits, the question is, are they being pushed in the right direction?

Review: The Vine Store

in Featured Essays

Thevinestore.com sells wine racks and wine glasses. They offer a large selection of wine racks including Wood Wine Racks, Metal Wine Racks, Hanging Wine Racks, Wall Mounted Wine Racks, Wine Rack Furniture, Specialty Wine Racks and Wine Glasses. The Vine Store’s wine racks are offered in a variety of bottle capacity sizes. They also carry a range of racks for commercial wine storage needs. All of their products are shipped nationwide through UPS or FedEx Ground at actual cost with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

The best part of the store is the convenience of being able to order a quality wine rack easy 24/7. With Christmas coming up, it is a great way to get a great gift quickly and easily which is what I am all about!

Their wine racks come in modern, classic, and distinctive designs. They are sure to have a wine rack to fit anyone’s taste and décor. These are the highest quality racks available in the U.S.

Another feature I really liked about the site is that they have a customer service department that is open Monday through Friday, Nine to Five Eastern Standard Time. You can even place an order through the customer service department if for some reason you don’t want to order on the website. I find it frustrating using a website that doesn’t offer any other way to contact them (other than email), especially if I am purchasing something. The Vine Store eliminates any worry about not being able to contact someone.

The Vine Store’s online store
is hosted on Yahoo! Store’s servers and our orders are processed using Yahoo! Store’s shopping cart. Yahoo! Store uses secure servers to protect all of your personal information including your name, address and credit card information.

I was asked to review TEXAS-Junkyards.com and was leery at first since this isn’t really an area I am familiar with. But I have to say, the site was so user friendly, I had nothing to fear! TEXAS-Junkyards.com is a great resource for Texans looking for used car parts.

TEXAS-junkyards.com was designed and implemented to help the state of Texas better serve the recycling industry and allow salvage yards to sell more auto parts to the people in their state.

Many times people don’t know where to find salvage yards in Texas. TEXAS-junkyards.com has made this process easy. Simply select the city nearest you in the options on the left hand side of the page or submit a part request and allow Texas Junk Yards and Salvage Yards respond directly to you via E-Mail or phone call. Each city breakdown also includes the name, phone number, and address for each automotive recycler. You can also search for specific part at any salvage yard. The Used Car Parts Selector shows which junk yard carries parts for specific makes, models, and years.

As everyone begins to focus on ways to be Green, TEXAS-junkyards.com makes finding a qualified salvage yard in Texas easier than it has ever been before!

Travel Inspiration: Quantum of Solice

by Christine on November 18, 2008 · 0 comments

in Travel Inspiration

Hands down, the most travel inspiring movie of the year is Quantum of Solace. The latest James Bond flick is a dizzying ride around the world. Filming locations include Chile, England, Mexico, Austria, Italy, Panama, and Spain.

Filming began in January in the studio in England and moved to Chile and Panama in February and March. Making the movie in so many locations proved to be an adventure in itself.

According to The James Bond Dossier, in one quite bizarre incident in Sierra Gorda in the Antofagasta region of Chile, the local mayor caused an on-set incident. Upset at his county being portrayed as Bolivia and claiming that the producers had not requested his permission to film there, he drove his car onto the set where Daniel Craig and Olga Kurylenko were filming a scene; he was immediately arrested for trespass, but released shortly after.

If you don’t find travel inspiration in Quantum of Solace, nothing will inspire you. Check the movie out in theaters now and for travel information to any of Bond’s favorite destinations, check out Lonely Planet.
