Travel Inspiration: Christmas!

Here’s a list of our favorite holiday movies that also happen to provide travel inspiration if you are looking to get away for the holidays.

Miracle of 34th Street

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is not only the setting for the 1947 movie Miracle on 34th Street but also an unforgettable experience everyone should have!

A Christmas Story

Cleveland, OH is the real home of A Christmas Story. The house used in the film is now open for tours and after a tour you can stop by Higbee’s Department Store to say hello to Santa.

It’s A Wonderful Life

Though Bedford Falls is a fictional locale, the residents of Senaca Falls, NY say director Frank Capra modeled the town after their quaint village. On the weekend of December 12-14 Seneca Falls has it’s annual celebration of the It’s a Wonderful Life. Actors will reenact scenes from the film, there will be a special screening of the movie, and children dressed as angels will ring bells throughout town, signifying another angel getting its wings.

The Holiday

Filmed in L.A. and Surrey, England, this movie always makes us want to spend Christmas in a cozy English cottage. The Rosehill Cottage used in the film doesn’t actually exist. The house was a fiberglass set built in a field in Shere, a village on the River Tillngbourn in Surrey, England. But don’t worry, we tracked down the real cottage they modeled the set after. Here’s information on that house and luckily it is available for rental year round!

Celebrity Obsession

in Featured Essays

I’ve been interviewed a few times in the past month or so about OLV. As expected, due to the nature of our site, I inevitably am asked about celebrity obsession, the paparazzi, the draw of seeing stars, and other related issues surrounding our fascination as a culture with celebrity. So I thought it might be something worth exploring in our essays section. To start things off, I’ve collected a series of links below to a few thought provoking articles about celebrity in western culture. Take a look and stay tuned for more in this new series.
